For instance, I remember when I was young, I wanted to be like my father. He was a sarcastic and miserable person who chain-smoked, and for some reason, I thought that was cool. So I defined myself as a sarcastic and miserable (i.e. cool) person. And, my behavior followed suit. I was always making negative remarks and acting sullen and aloof. (I cringe when I think about that now.) Then one day I decided that I wasn’t a sarcastic and miserable person, and my whole demeanor changed. I started to become happy, supportive, friendly, and optimistic. Imagine that! And suddenly, because I no longer defined myself in a way that I saw my dad, I was no longer a replica of my dad. I was able to quit smoking, pursue my dreams, and think for myself.
This quest reminded me to look at the way I define myself and make some changes because some things are still not working for me. For instance, I realized that I was defining myself as someone who has a chronic illness that couldn’t be fixed. Yikes! I’m glad I took this quest and made this realization now so that I could start taking healthier actions.
